  • Lock down your server’s firewall. Your firewall is your frontline defense and it should be locked down. Many open source software firewalls are available online to help you put a secured fence for your cloud servers. However, many users don’t know how to use it properly. Only open ports for admin and service ports when needed and for as long as it’s needed.
  • Always keep a backup. It’s always important to keep a backup of your data offline. Always consider the worst case scenario such as the cloud crashing (this is very rare, though). When it happens, you’ll not be able to access your data for hours due to such event. Public cloud servers are offering the same server for different clients and there’s a chance that your data could get lost. Therefore, it is very important to keep your vital documents backed up to save you time and money.
  • Always use a strong password. Weak passwords are the number one reason of why data gets hacked. If you’re using a strong password, it will be harder for hackers to gain access to your sensitive data. Passwords should contain 10-12 alphanumeric characters along with uppercase and lowercase letters and symbols to make it even harder to crack. But do keep in mind that you must create an easy to remember password or you can use open source password manager tools to help you keep your passwords.
  • Encrypt your data. Encrypting your data is very important to make sure that it’s protected against malicious users. Encryption will make it difficult for hackers to steal your data.
